Every animal has certain needs. Part of your job is to provide for and take care of these needs. Identification of your animal, and its feeding and housing are all important.

I. Identification

Every animal should have identification or an ID that contains a series of numbers or letters, or both.

Ear tags, electronic ear tags, tattoos, brands and brisket tags are types of identification used for cattle and sheep. In swine, ear notching also is common.
If you have only one or two animals, it may easy for you to recognize them, but identification is still important. What would happen if:
  Your animal was lost?
• Proper identification may help you find it.
Your animal had to be treated for a disease?
    • Recording medications is easier and more accurate if the animal has an ID.
Good animal management includes using IDs.

Animal identification is required for pedigrees and performance records, which include information such as birth date, weaning weight, average daily gain and more.
