Study Guide and Test Information - Updated 2006
Study guides have been developed for use senior level youth with strong beef or swine interests. Completion of a study guide will provide an in-depth knowledge of the Nebraska BQA program, or the National PQA program, respectively. The study guides will prepare youth for the testing option in the Assuring Quality program.
Keys for the study guides are provided to help youth with questions they may experience difficulty in answering. They are not intended to use as hand-outs before youth have attempted to answer the questions on his/her own.
The Beef study guide is to be used with the Nebraska Beef Quality Assurance Certification Manual – October 2003 Update.
The pork study guide is to be used with the following references:
- National Pork Board’s “Pork Quality Assurance Handbook”, 2001 Edition
- Youth PQA “Just the Facts” facts sheets available on-line to educators at http://pqa.porkboard.org/youth/documents.asp (password protected).
Specific fact sheets used are:
- The Porcine Stress Gene: What the Show Pig Industry Needs to Know
- Meat Quality
- Clipping Show Pigs
- Handling and Management to Prevent Stress in Show Pigs
Guidelines for Testing Option |
| A few things to keep
in mind regarding the testing out option: |
| 1. |
This option is available for youth ages 12 and
over. |
| 2. |
Intermediate Level tests are to be used with
youth ages 12 - 14. |
| 3. |
Senior Level tests are to be used with youth
ages 15 and over. |
| 4. |
Passing is considered 70%
| a. |
This is a minimum of 17 correct (up to
8 wrong) on the Intermediate level |
| b. |
This is a minimum of 21 correct (up to
9 wrong on the Senior level |
|
| 5. |
Tests are NOT open book. |
| 6. |
Youth may take the test more than once. |
| 7. |
The different versions in the Intermediate level
do not have exactly the same questions, but the
material covered is very similar. |
| 8. |
The different versions in the Senior level do
have some different questions, although the material
covered does not differ a lot. The majority of the
questions on the beef and swine emphasis versions
apply to multiple species, only a few are species
specific. |
| 9. |
Answers to all questions can be found in the
references listed. |
| 10. |
Please KEEP the actual tests, do not
hand these out to youth or leaders. |
| 11. |
Once a youth has passed the test, he/she does
not need to retake a test until the move to the
next level. In other words, a 12 year old that passes
the test is done until he/she turns 15. |
| 12. |
If youth have problems with the tests, the practice
tests on the web should be quite helpful, as many
questions are similar, and the practice tests have
explanations for the correct and incorrect answers.
