Prevention

We should always try to prevent quality problems before they happen. A few things to keep in mind:

• Keep chemicals and pesticides away from feeds.
  - Chemicals may spill. Even small amounts in the feed may make your animals ill.
• Teach your family or employees about proper care of your animals and proper quality assurance methods.
  - Sometimes you may need to have someone else care for your animals.
- When someone else does care for your animals, always give instructions on proper feeding, watering and housing, as well as any medications they may need.
• Try to follow quality assurance methods at all times.
  - If a problem occurs or you didn’t follow quality assurance procedures, talk to your veterinarian or extension educator to find out what needs to be done.
• Develop a herd management plan to help keep your animals healthy.
  - Know when to vaccinate your animals.
- Know when to treat your animals for parasites (worms, lice, etc.).
- Work with family members, veterinarians and others to learn about these procedures.
